Context

The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) leads the Olympic movement in Romania and sends the national team to the Olympic Games. In 2016, ahead of the Rio Games, we built the committee’s official app for iOS and Android.

The app brought everything on the COSR website into the fans’ phones, plus what the website could not offer: live results throughout the Games.

The challenge

The Olympic Games have a fixed date, and the app had to be on the App Store and Google Play before the opening ceremony. During the Games it had to show Romania’s results and medals as they came in, with data from an international provider of sports results.

All the content came from the COSR website, so the app had to update itself, with no one lifting a finger, whenever something new was published. And every screen had to follow the committee’s brand book.

What we built

The COSR app, for iPhone and Android, with screens we designed based on the COSR brand book.

The COSR app’s home screen: a photo of a gymnast, the day’s news and Romania’s Olympic medals, with the gold, silver and bronze counter
A news item open in the app, with photo, text and the social sharing buttons
The page of the “Sydney 2000” Olympic Complex at Izvorani, with photo, facilities and presentation
The list of Summer Olympic Games, with each edition’s emblem, from Moscow 1980 to London 2012
Romania’s Olympic team, by sport, with each athlete’s photo and details

News and medals, on the first screen: the latest news from the COSR website, with posts from the committee’s Twitter account among them, and Romania’s Olympic medal count, by gold, silver and bronze.

Live results, during the Games: a section that switched on for the length of the competition and showed the Romanian athletes’ results as they came in from the data provider.

Everything on the website: the committee’s history and leadership, the figures of Romanian Olympism, the Olympic Complex at Izvorani, the sports, the editions of the Games and Romania’s Olympic teams. The content loaded from the website, through the data interface we built for the app.

For sponsors: a sponsors page and dedicated screens that appeared now and then while browsing. Every page could be shared on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn.

Result

The app was launched publicly, with a presentation event, in the summer of 2016, ahead of the Rio Olympic Games. Fans followed Team Romania in it throughout the Games.
